What cant is and why it matters

Cant means your rifle barrel is tilted left or right from perfectly vertical. In 10m air rifle shooting, where the ten-ring is only 0.5 mm wide, even a small tilt moves your point of impact enough to cost you rings. The shift is mostly lateral, meaning shots land to the left or right of where your sights say they should, but there is a small vertical component as well.

Most shooters do not realize they are canting. It feels natural because the dominant eye, shoulder height, and grip all subtly bias the rifle to one side. The problem shows up on the target as a horizontal stringing of shot groups, even when the shooter feels their hold is rock solid. If your groups drift consistently to one side but your zero is confirmed at another session, cant is a likely culprit.

What causes cant

Cant usually comes from one of three sources, and sometimes a combination of all three.

Asymmetric stance. If your hips or shoulders are uneven, the rifle naturally follows the tilt of your torso. Shooters with a slight scoliosis, uneven leg length, or a habit of dropping one shoulder more than the other are especially prone. The fix starts with standing in front of a mirror and checking whether your shoulders are level when you raise the rifle.

Grip and hand placement. Your left hand (for a right-handed shooter) supports the rifle on the palm rest. If that hand sits at an angle on the rest, or if you grip the forend with a twisting pressure, the barrel tilts. The palm should sit flat, with the rifle's weight resting on the heel of your hand without any rotational force.

Head tilt. When you lean your head to meet the stock rather than bringing the stock to your head, the rifle tilts with it. This is common among shooters who have not adjusted their stock height and comb properly. The cheek piece should meet your cheek without you having to tilt your skull down or to the side.

How to detect cant

You cannot fix what you cannot measure. Here are three reliable ways to find out whether and how much you are canting.

The plumb line test

Draw a vertical line on a blank piece of paper and pin it to your target backer at the range. Look through your sights at the line. If the front sight post does not sit centered on the vertical line when your sights are aligned on the target centre, your rifle is canted. This test takes 30 seconds and requires no special equipment.

Bubble level

Attach a small spirit level (bubble level) to your rifle. Most air rifles have a flat surface on the barrel block or action where a self-adhesive level sticks securely. Look at the bubble before each shot during dry-fire. If the bubble drifts to one side consistently, you have a cant habit. Some shooters keep the level on during competition, glancing at it as part of their pre-shot routine.

Target analysis

Take photos of your targets with TargetLog and look at the horizontal distribution of your shot groups. If your groups form a slight diagonal line from lower-left to upper-right (or the reverse), that pattern is a strong indicator of cant combined with some vertical error. Drills to correct cant

Once you know you are canting, these drills retrain your muscle memory. Do them during dry-fire sessions first, then carry them into live fire.

Wall drill with plumb line

Hang a weighted string from the ceiling in front of your shooting position. Load and dry-fire at the string, focusing on keeping the front sight perfectly centered on it. Do 20 repetitions. If the sight drifts off the line, reset your grip and stance before the next shot. This drill builds the visual reference your brain needs to feel what "level" actually is.

Level check before every shot

Add a specific step to your pre-shot routine: glance at the bubble level (or at a vertical reference on the target backer) before lowering your finger to the trigger. At first this will feel slow and clunky. After a few hundred dry-fire repetitions, the check becomes automatic and costs you no time at all. One-handed balance test

Hold the rifle in your support hand only, with no grip from your shooting hand. Let the rifle settle naturally. Observe whether it tilts. If the rifle hangs level, your hand placement is good and any cant during shooting comes from your upper body position. If it tilts, adjust your palm rest height or hand angle until the rifle balances level on its own.

Equipment checks that reduce cant

Sometimes the rifle itself encourages cant. A few adjustments can make it easier to stay level.

Palm rest height. If the palm rest is too high or too low, your hand sits at an angle and the rifle follows. Adjust the rest so the rifle sits in your hand with the barrel perfectly vertical when your arm is relaxed.

Stock slope and toe. The stock's toe (the bottom edge at the butt) should match the angle of your shoulder pocket. If the stock pushes your shoulder up on one side, the rifle cant compensates. A gunsmith can adjust this, or you can try shimming the buttplate.

Sling tension. In three-position rifle, the sling can pull the rifle into a cant if it is twisted or routed incorrectly. In 10m standing there is no sling, but shooters who also shoot prone sometimes carry the cant habit over. Check that your standing position is genuinely free of sling-influenced tension.

How much cant is acceptable

Zero cant is the goal, but in practice a fraction of a degree is unavoidable. At 10 metres, one degree of cant produces roughly 1 mm of lateral shift, which is two ring widths on an air rifle target. For shooters competing at the top levels, even half a degree matters. For club-level shooters averaging in the 530 to 560 range, keeping cant under two degrees is a realistic and worthwhile target.

The important thing is consistency. If you always cant two degrees to the right, you can zero your sights to compensate. But cant varies with fatigue, grip pressure, and stance freshness, so zeroing for a consistent cant only works during perfect conditions. Training cant out of your technique is more reliable than compensating for it.

Common mistakes

Overcorrecting. Shooters who discover they cant left sometimes push the rifle right, creating an oscillating cant that is worse than a steady lean. Focus on a neutral, relaxed position rather than forcing the rifle to the opposite side.

Ignoring cant in dry-fire. Dry-fire without feedback is where cant habits get reinforced. Always use a vertical reference or bubble level when doing your dry-fire training drills.

Chasing zero instead of fixing the cause. Moving your sights to compensate for cant masks the problem instead of solving it. Fix the stance and grip first, then rezero.
