All TargetLog field notes in discipline guides — drills, gear, and guidance for ISSF precision shooters.
ISSF 10m air rifle is shot standing at 10 metres with a .177 calibre air rifle. Athletes fire 60 shots in qualification (scored in tenths, max 654.0), then the top eight advance to an elimination-style final to decide the medals.
There is no single minimum age for air rifle shooting. Most clubs start juniors between 8 and 10, and the governing bodies care more about maturity, supervision, and safe instruction than a birthday.
ISSF mixed team events pair one man and one woman on the same score. Each fires 30 shots in qualification, then the top four pairs split into a bronze match and a gold match decided shot-by-shot, first to 16 points.
ISSF 10m air pistol is shot standing, one-handed, at 10 metres with a .177 calibre air pistol. Athletes fire 60 shots in qualification (max 600 points), then the top eight advance to a decimal-scored elimination final to decide the medals.
ISSF 50m rifle 3 positions is a .22 LR event where shooters fire 60 shots across kneeling, prone, and standing. The top 8 advance to a standing-only final that decides the medals.
FFTIR, BDS and NRA targets all borrow the ring-target idea from ISSF paper, but each federation sets its own sizes, ring counts and gauge rules. FFTIR reuses actual ISSF cards like the C50 under French courses of fire, BDS designs its own targets with different ring geometry, and the NRA AR-4 scales everything down for 5m BB gun juniors.
FFTIR TAR 830 and TAR 832 combine 20 slow precision shots on a C50 target with 20 shots at falling steel gongs in 20- and 10-second series. TAR 830 is for modern standard service pistols, TAR 832 for pre-1970 military handguns. Each round offers 200 points.
25m pistol is a 60-shot event split between precision and rapid-fire series at 25 metres with a .22 LR semi-auto. 50m pistol is 60 slow shots in two hours with a near-unrestricted single-shot .22. Same calibre, almost nothing else in common.
ISSF 25m rapid fire pistol is shot with a .22 LR calibre pistol at 25 metres. Athletes fire 60 shots across two stages, hitting five targets in sequences of 8, 6, and 4 seconds. The event has been part of every modern Olympics since 1896.
ISSF 25m sport pistol is a 60-shot match split into a precision stage and a rapid-fire stage, both fired at 25 metres with a .22 LR pistol. It is the only women's Olympic pistol event and rewards shooters who can switch between deliberate accuracy and controlled speed.
50m rifle 3 positions scoring is really three separate scorecards stitched into one match. Prone is nearly perfect, kneeling gives back a little, and standing decides most finals. Here is what each position should score, and where your points actually go.
Air rifle is the more stable and forgiving platform, so beginners usually see faster early progress with it. Air pistol is cheaper to start and builds trigger and hold control that transfers everywhere.
50m free pistol is 60 shots at 50 metres with a .22 LR pistol, fired one-handed within two hours. It demands extreme hold stability and is one of the purest tests of precision shooting in the ISSF programme.
ISSF 25m center fire pistol is a men's event shot with centre-fire handguns between 7.62 mm and 9.65 mm calibre. The 60-shot match splits into a 30-shot precision stage and a 30-shot rapid-fire stage, both at 25 metres.
ISSF 25m Standard Pistol is a 60-shot match fired at 25 metres with three timed stages that demand both precision and speed. It is an excellent stepping-stone discipline for shooters moving from 10m air pistol to center-fire events.
