What sight alignment actually means
In 10m air rifle, your iron sights give you two elements to line up: the rear diopter and the front aperture. When both are centered on each other and the whole assembly sits beneath the target bull, you have a correct sight picture. That sentence sounds simple. In practice, getting all three elements, your eye, and the bull to line up the same way shot after shot is where most beginners lose points.
The diopter is the rear sight on your rifle. It is a small hole, usually adjustable from 1.0 to 1.6 mm, that you look through. Because it is a pinhole, it acts like a lensless camera obscura: it sharpens whatever it is focused on. The trick is knowing what to focus on.
Set your diopter to focus on the front sight
The single biggest mistake newer air rifle shooters make is focusing on the target bull. It feels natural; you want to see where you are aiming. But your front sight element, the ring or post at the muzzle end, is only about 600 to 700 mm from your eye, while the target is 10,000 mm away. Your eye cannot keep both sharp at the same time.

The reason is straightforward: any misalignment between the rear and front sight moves the point of impact far more than the same angular error in target placement. A small drift in where the target bull sits under the front ring costs you a fraction of a ring.
So set your diopter so the front sight ring or post appears crisp and sharp. The target bull will look slightly soft, and that is fine. You should still be able to count the rings on the target; you just do not need to read the numbers.
Choose the right front aperture size
The front aperture is the ring you see when you look through the diopter. ISSF rules specify that front irons must be open (no magnifying elements), but the ring diameter is up to you. Common sizes range from 3.0 mm to 4.5 mm.
A smaller ring does two things. It increases depth of field, meaning both the front sight and the target stay acceptably sharp over a wider range of distances. It also reduces the amount of target visible inside the ring, which can make the bull easier to center. The trade-off is light: a smaller hole means a dimmer picture, and in poorly lit ranges your eye struggles.
Your eye-to-sight distance matters here. Shooters with a longer distance between their eye and the rear sight (often taller shooters or those with a lower cheek piece) need a slightly larger front aperture to get the same apparent size. A practical rule of thumb: the front ring should appear to be about 1.5 to 2 times wider than the target bull when viewed through the diopter. Start at 4.0 mm and adjust from there.

Eye position and the headstop
Once your diopter and front aperture are set, your eye position behind the rear sight becomes the variable that matters most. The diopter is a pinhole, and pinholes are sensitive to off-axis viewing. If your eye drifts even 2 mm left, right, up, or down between shots, the sight picture shifts and your group moves with it.
This is why a headstop, also called a cheek rest or comb, is essential. The headstop gives your cheek a repeatable reference point on the stock so your eye returns to the same spot behind the diopter every time. Set the headstop height so that when your cheek rests on it, your eye is naturally centered behind the rear sight without having to press or tilt your head.
A quick self-test: close your eyes, settle into your position, open your eyes, and check if the sight picture looks centered. If the front ring is off to one side, adjust your headstop or your position until it comes up centered naturally. Do this check at the start of every training session.
Common sight-picture problems and how to spot them
Group shifting left or right across a card
If your shots walk horizontally over the course of a 60-shot match, your eye position is probably drifting. Check that your cheek is consistently on the headstop, and that you are not unconsciously tilting your head as you fatigue. Group high and low, inconsistent
Vertical inconsistency often traces back to head position too, specifically the vertical component. Make sure your cheek bone contacts the same spot on the headstop each time.
Target bull too blurry to see rings
If the target bull is so blurry you cannot distinguish the 9 ring from the 10, your diopter is focused too close. Back the diopter out (unscrew it slightly) until the front sight starts to soften and the target gets a little sharper. Find the balance point where the front sight is still sharp enough for alignment but the target rings are visible.
A training drill for sight-picture consistency
Here is a drill you can do in your next dry-fire session:
- Set up a blank sheet of paper at 10 m (or your usual distance).
- Close your eyes, build your position, open your eyes.
- If the front ring is not centered in the diopter, stop. Adjust your headstop or position. Repeat until you get centered sight picture three times in a row with your eyes closed.
- Now add a target with a clear bull. Focus on the front sight. Let the bull float under the ring.
- Dry-fire ten shots, closing your eyes and resetting between each one. After the session, ask yourself: did the sight picture look the same on every shot?
This drill trains the muscle memory of returning your eye to the exact same position. It also reveals whether your headstop needs adjustment.
Tracking your sight-picture quality over time
The only way to know whether your sight picture is actually consistent is to measure it.
