Why batch testing matters at the elite level
At club level, opening a fresh tin of quality match pellets and loading them one after another works fine. The pellets are good enough, and your technique still accounts for the majority of score variation. But as your scores climb into the mid-570s for air rifle or mid-560s for air pistol, you reach a point where the pellet itself becomes a meaningful source of error.
Manufacturing tolerance on match pellets is tight, but it is not zero. Even within a single brand and head size, different production runs (identified by a lot or batch number stamped on the tin) produce pellets with subtle differences in alloy composition, die wear, and diameter consistency. These differences show up as a slightly larger group on paper, maybe half a millimetre wider. Half a millimetre at 10 metres is the difference between an 8 and a 9 on the scoring ring. Over 60 shots, that adds up to several points.
Batch testing is the process of finding which production runs group best through your specific barrel. Every barrel is slightly different, so a batch that shoots brilliantly in one gun might be mediocre in another. This is why elite shooters buy pellets in bulk from a single lot, test them, and then train and compete exclusively from that supply until it runs out.
If you are still working on building a stable standing position or breaking through a score plateau, batch testing is not your highest priority. Come back to this when your fundamentals are solid and you are looking for the last few points.

The rest is the most critical piece. Without it, you are testing your hold stability as much as the pellet, and the results become noisy and unreliable.
Step one: set up a consistent test protocol
Consistency in the test protocol matters more than the precision of your measuring tool. If you change your rest setup between batches, you cannot compare the results fairly.
Pick a fixed distance of exactly 10 metres (or your competition distance). Use the same rest, the same target type, and the same lighting for every batch you test. Fire groups of 5 shots per pellet, with 3-5 groups per batch. That gives you 15-25 data points per batch, enough to see a meaningful pattern without burning through your entire sample.
Number or letter each group on the target so you can trace it back to the specific tin it came from. Shoot all groups from batch A before moving to batch B; switching back and forth introduces the risk of mixing up labels.
Step two: measure the groups
After firing each group of 5, measure the extreme spread, which is the distance between the centres of the two furthest-apart holes. You can measure this with a dial caliper, a specialised group-measuring gauge, or even a ruler if you are careful.
Record each measurement next to the group label. At the end of the session, average the group sizes for each batch. The batch with the smallest average extreme spread is your winner.
Keep in mind that a single flyer can skew your average. If one group in an otherwise tight batch has a single hole far from the others, note it separately. A pellet that produces four tight shots and one wild one may have a quality control issue rather than a fundamental consistency problem. One outlier in five shots is forgivable; two outliers across three groups suggests the batch is genuinely inconsistent.
Weight sorting: what it does and when to bother
Weight sorting means weighing each individual pellet on a precision scale (0.01 grain resolution) and separating them into groups by weight. Most match pellets in .177 calibre for 10m air rifle weigh around 8.0-8.2 grains, and for air pistol around 7.0 grains. Within a single tin, you might see a spread of 0.2-0.3 grains between the lightest and heaviest pellets.
The theory is simple: pellets that weigh the same will have similar muzzle velocities, and similar velocities mean similar trajectories. A pellet that is 0.2 grains lighter might leave the barrel 2-3 m/s faster, arriving at the target a fraction of a millimetre higher. At 10 metres this effect is small but not zero.
In practice, weight sorting helps most when:
- Your barrel velocity is already very consistent (less than 5 m/s spread across a tin)
- You are shooting scores where half a millimetre of vertical dispersion matters
- You have the patience to weigh several hundred pellets
For shooters who are still developing their technique, the 30 minutes spent weighing a tin of pellets is better spent on dry-fire training drills. The human error in trigger control, hold stability, and follow-through swamps the pellet-weight effect entirely.
If you do sort by weight, a practical approach is to weigh the entire tin, note the median weight, and set aside any pellets more than 0.1 grain away from that median. Use the matched pellets for competition and the outliers for training.
Head size sorting: less useful than it sounds
Head size sorting, the practice of measuring each pellet's head diameter with a micrometer and grouping by size, sounds logical but delivers diminishing returns for 10m shooting. Most match pellet brands already sell pellets sorted by head size in 0.01 mm increments (4.48, 4.49, 4.50 mm, and so on). Within a single tin of a given head size, the actual variation is typically less than 0.005 mm, which is at or below the practical resolution of affordable micrometers.
Head size testing is more useful as a one-time exercise when you are choosing your match pellets. Buy tins in two adjacent head sizes (say, 4.49 mm and 4.50 mm), group-test both, and stick with whichever groups better. Once you have found the right head size for your barrel, buying that size consistently is more productive than trying to sub-sort within a tin.
For field-target and long-range airgun shooters at 25-50 metres, head size sorting has more value because the pellet travels further and any inconsistency in the bore fit has more time to compound. At 10 metres, the flight time is so short that the effect is marginal.
Using a chronograph alongside group testing
A chronograph measures the muzzle velocity of each shot. For pellet testing, it serves as a secondary filter. After you have identified your best-batch pellets by group size, run a velocity string of 10-15 shots from that batch and check the extreme spread and standard deviation.
As a rough guide for 10m competition:
- Excellent: extreme spread under 5 m/s, standard deviation under 1.5 m/s
- Acceptable: extreme spread 5-8 m/s, standard deviation 1.5-3 m/s
- Concerning: extreme spread over 8 m/s, or any single shot more than 10 m/s from the average
A batch that groups well but has erratic velocity is unusual but possible. It might indicate inconsistent pellet lubrication or a die that is wearing unevenly. In that case, trust the group test first; velocity is a proxy for consistency, but group size on paper is the direct measure.
How many pellets to buy and how long they last
A typical ISSF 10m competition requires 60 shots for qualification (plus finals shots for the top 8). Training sessions typically run 40-80 shots. A single tin of 500 pellets covers roughly one to two weeks of daily training.
For batch testing, buying 5-10 tins from the same lot number gives you enough pellets to test several batches and still have a meaningful competition supply left over. Many shooters coordinate with clubmates to split a bulk order, since some distributors sell in cases of 20 or more tins.
Stored properly in a dry, temperature-stable environment, match pellets last well over a year.
