Why shooting clothing matters

Rifle shooting clothing is not fashion. A properly fitted jacket and trousers stabilize your body in position, reduce muscular fatigue, and give you a repeatable platform shot after shot. In ISSF competition, where a single point separates medal positions, that consistency is the difference between a personal best and a frustrating session.

New shooters often underestimate how much difference the right clothing makes. A jacket that is too loose provides no structural support. One that is too tight restricts your breathing and makes it harder to settle into position. The sweet spot is snug enough to feel like a lightweight exoskeleton, flexible enough to let you move naturally between shots.

Jacket versus trousers: what each piece does

Your shooting jacket handles most of the stability work. The stiff canvas and leather panels across your shoulders, upper back, and torso lock your upper body into a consistent geometry. When you raise the rifle, the jacket resists the asymmetric loading that would otherwise pull your shoulder out of alignment. Most competition jackets also feature a front closure system with buttons or hooks that lets you adjust the torso tightness independently of the arm fit.

Trousers focus on the lower body. The stiffened panels around the hips and lumbar region prevent your pelvis from shifting in standing and kneeling. In prone position, trousers help keep your legs from splaying and maintain contact with the mat. Not every air-rifle shooter trains in trousers, but 50m three-position athletes consider them essential.

Both garments work together. If your jacket is right but your trousers are loose, your lower body drifts between shots and you lose the stability the jacket provides up top. The system only holds when both pieces fit.

Sizing: the measurements that actually matter

This is where most first-time buyers go wrong. Shooting clothing sizes have nothing to do with your street clothes. A size 48 from one brand might correspond to a size 52 from another, and neither maps to a standard dress shirt or trouser measurement. You need to take specific body measurements and compare them to each manufacturer's chart.

The key measurements for a jacket are:

  • Back length: From the C7 vertebra (the prominent bone at the base of your neck) down to your natural waistline.
  • Chest circumference: Around the fullest part of your chest, under your arms, with a relaxed breath.
  • Shoulder width: From the edge of one acromion to the other, measured across the top of your shoulders.
  • Arm length: From the acromion down to your wrist bone, with your arm slightly bent.

For trousers, you need:

  • Waist circumference: At your natural waistline.
  • Hip circumference: Around the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
  • Inside leg: From the crotch seam to the floor (or to your ankle bone if you prefer a shorter break).

Have someone else take these measurements. Self-measurement with a tape measure leads to errors, especially on the back length and shoulder width. Stand in your shooting stance while being measured, because your torso geometry changes when you raise your arms and rotate your shoulders.

What to expect from each price tier

Shooting clothing spans a wide price range, and the differences between tiers are meaningful.

Club loaners and basic canvas jackets (100 to 350 euros): These are single-layer canvas jackets with minimal padding, no leather, and a simple button closure. Clubs often keep a rack of these in common sizes. They pass equipment control, but they offer limited adjustability and tend to fit poorly around the shoulders. Mid-range leather-and-canvas jackets (500 to 900 euros): This is where most competitive shooters land. These jackets combine leather panels on high-wear areas (shoulders, elbows, collar) with stiff canvas across the torso. They offer adjustment straps, hook closures, and sometimes removable padding in the collar and shoulder areas. Brands like Sperisen, Intarso, and MEC dominate this segment. The fit is better than entry-level gear, and the leather adds durability where you need it most.

Premium and custom jackets (900 to 1,500+ euros): Kurt Thune and a few other makers offer made-to-measure or semi-custom options. These feature premium leather, extensive adjustment systems, and panels cut to your exact measurements. If you are competing at national or international level, the investment makes sense. For club-level shooters, the performance gain over a well-fitted mid-range jacket is marginal.

Trousers follow a similar tier structure, generally running about 40 to 60 percent of the jacket price in the same range.

Choosing the right brand

There is no single "best" brand. The right choice depends on your body shape, your budget, and which dealer can handle adjustments and alterations.

Kurt Thune (Finland): The benchmark for competition clothing. Premium pricing, extensive customization, and excellent durability. Many national teams are outfitted in Thune gear. Their sizing guide is detailed and their customer service is responsive. Best for shooters who have settled on a position and want gear that lasts for years.

Sperisen (Switzerland): Strong mid-range option with a reputation for comfortable fits. Their jackets tend to suit average builds well and the leather quality is good for the price. Available through most European dealers.

Intarso (Switzerland): Known for well-engineered adjustment systems. If you have a body shape that falls between standard sizes, Intarso's straps and hook closures make it easier to dial in the fit without expensive alterations.

MEC High Tech Shooting (Germany): Competitive pricing and a wide range of sizes. Their entry-level jackets are popular with clubs. Not as refined as Thune or Sperisen at the top end, but solid value for developing shooters.

Capapie (India): More affordable option that has improved significantly in recent years. Worth considering if budget is a constraint and you cannot find good secondhand gear locally.

Secondhand market: Shooting clothing holds its value well. Check club notice boards, federation classifieds, and dedicated shooting-equipment marketplaces. A two-year-old Thune jacket that was well cared for will perform identically to a new one, often at half the price. Inspect for ISSF seal validity and check that the button overlap meets the current 80 mm minimum.

Getting the ISSF seal

Every piece of shooting clothing used in ISSF competition must carry a valid ISSF seal. The seal is a small metal or plastic tag affixed to the garment, registered to a specific athlete. When you buy new gear, the dealer will often arrange sealing through a national federation or at the next competition.

If you buy secondhand, the existing seal is registered to the previous owner and must be replaced. Take the jacket or trousers to equipment control at your first competition and the officials will test the panels and issue a new seal in your name. You can only have one sealed jacket and one sealed pair of trousers at a time.

Breaking in new clothing

A brand-new shooting jacket will feel rigid. The canvas has not yet conformed to your body, and the leather panels are stiff. Do not show up to a competition with gear you have worn twice. Plan for at least 10 to 15 training sessions before you compete in new clothing.

During those sessions, focus on getting comfortable in position. Raise the rifle, lower it, shift your weight, and adjust the closure straps until the jacket sits the same way every time. Pay attention to any pressure points or restriction in your breathing. Minor fit issues often resolve themselves as the material softens, but a significant restriction around the chest or armpit may need professional alteration.

Trousers break in faster than jackets, usually within 5 to 8 sessions. The hip and lumbar panels soften relatively quickly under the repeated loading of your shooting stance.

Common mistakes to avoid

Buying too large "to grow into." Shooting clothing relies on being tight. An oversized jacket provides zero structural support. It is like wearing hiking boots three sizes too big and expecting good ankle support. Buy for your current measurements.

Ignoring the button overlap requirement. The ISSF requires at least 80 mm of overlap on the jacket closure. Some older or secondhand jackets have 70 mm overlap from the previous rulebook. If yours falls short, a seamstress can extend the overlap by adding cord loops or relocating buttons. Get this done before equipment control.

Skipping the stiffness test on secondhand gear. The 2026 stiffness limits (3.0 mm deflection) are tested in 15 to 30 seconds, depending on the panel. Gear that passed under the old 60-second protocol might now fail. Ask the seller if it has been tested under the 2026 rules, or budget for a test session before your first event.

Not wearing the right underlayer. Clothing worn under the jacket or trousers must not exceed 2.5 mm single thickness or 5 mm double thickness. A thick fleece under your shooting jacket will get you flagged at equipment control. Stick to a thin base layer.

Tracking your progress in new gear

Any equipment change, including new clothing, can temporarily affect your scores. Your groupings may shift as your body adapts to the new support geometry. That is normal and expected. What matters is whether your scores recover over the next few sessions.
