Score tells you what happened. The group tells you why.

Two shooters post the same 558. One held a coin-sized group slightly off center; the other sprayed shots across half the target and got lucky. The score can't tell them apart — the group can.

Group analysis is the diagnostic layer of shooting. Tighten the group and the score follows; chase the score and you never learn what your hold, position or trigger release is actually doing. TargetLog measures the group automatically on every session you score, from the same photograph.

What gets measured

  • Group diameter. The spread of your shots, session after session — the single best indicator of shooting consistency, plotted over your full history.
  • Group center offset. Where the group sits relative to the target center, and in which direction. This is the number that tells you "sight adjustment" from "technique problem."
  • Shot distribution. Histograms show whether shots cluster, string, or scatter — the signature of different errors: a horizontal string suggests trigger timing, vertical dispersion points at breathing or position fatigue.
  • Per-shot positions, preserved. Every detected hole keeps its position, so old sessions can be re-analyzed whenever you want another look.

From measurement to correction

The measurement is only half the value — the loop is the other half. Photograph and score a session, read the group, make one change (position, trigger, sights), then shoot the same analysis next session and see the delta. Over weeks, the group-diameter trend becomes the most honest feedback in your training: it can't be argued with and it doesn't care about your scorecard.

Zeroing gets faster too: when the group is tight but off-center, the offset tells you exactly how much correction to dial in before the next sighter.

Calipers, minus the calipers

Traditionally this analysis means a ruler, calipers and a notebook at the kitchen table after training. TargetLog does it at the firing line, on-device, in seconds — offline, with nothing uploaded. Works with every supported discipline and every session you've logged.
