Why the support side matters more than you think

Most shooters new to 10m air rifle standing spend their time worrying about the trigger hand, sight picture, or follow-through. Those all matter. But the real stability foundation comes from the support side: where your elbow meets your hip and where your hand meets the fore-end. Get these two contact points right and the rifle sits with noticeably less wobble. Get them wrong and you end up fighting your own body for sixty shots.

Think of it this way. Your left arm (for a right-handed shooter) is a single column carrying the weight of the rifle. Every joint in that column, from the shoulder to the wrist to the knuckles, adds potential movement. The fewer joints under tension, the less wobble gets transferred to the muzzle.

Elbow placement: bone, not belly

The single biggest mistake shooters make with the support side is letting the elbow drift forward onto the soft area of the stomach. The hip bone provides a hard, consistent contact point. Soft tissue does not.

When the elbow rests on the stomach, two problems show up. First, the contact point shifts under load because fat and muscle compress. Your position subtly changes between shots, which means your natural point of aim drifts. Second, stomach tissue transmits your pulse directly into the rifle. During a relaxed training session you might not notice this at all. Walk into a competition with elevated heart rate and that pulse shows up clearly in your sight picture.

The correct placement is directly on the hip bone or just in front of it, toward the stomach by a centimeter or two. This keeps the arm at a roughly vertical angle relative to the ground, which gives you a solid load-bearing column from the hand, through the forearm, down to the pelvis. A good shooting jacket has extra friction material under the elbow pad to prevent the elbow from sliding off the hip during a string of shots. Without a jacket this contact is far harder to maintain, which is one reason beginners without kit struggle more with wobble.

Some shooters physically cannot reach the hip bone with their elbow, particularly those with shorter arms or broader torsos. In that case the elbow rests against the lower ribs or ribcage area. The principle stays the same: find the hardest surface available and let the bone do the supporting, not muscle.

Moving the elbow up or down to fix height problems

You can use elbow placement to make small corrections to your natural point of aim height. Lowering the elbow drops the arm angle and brings the muzzle down. Raising it does the opposite. This is a fine-tuning tool, not a primary adjustment. If your natural point of aim is consistently too high or too low, adjust the buttplate or hand position first. Use the elbow only for the last millimeter of correction.

The reason to be cautious here is that moving the elbow off the hip bone in any direction reduces stability. Raising it above the hip means soft tissue support again. Moving it sideways compromises the straight-line load path from hand to ground. Make one small change, verify the effect, then leave it alone.

The three hand positions

Once the elbow is sorted, your hand becomes the next critical contact point. ISSF rules are flexible here: as long as your hand only touches the rifle (not your chest, your trigger hand, or any other body part), you can hold it however you want. Three approaches have proven themselves over decades of competition shooting.

Flat palm

The rifle rests directly in the palm of your hand, with your fingers pointing forward or slightly angled. Your wrist stays straight or bends very slightly backward. This is the lowest of the hand positions and the one most elite shooters use today.

Its main strength is the lack of tension. With no knuckles curled and no fingers actively gripping, the hand is almost completely relaxed. The palm is one broad surface rather than a platform built from tense joints. Pulse transfer through the palm is minimal because there are no tendons under strain directly beneath the rifle.

The tradeoff is height. A flat palm position sits lower than the alternatives, which means you need enough forearm length to reach the fore-end without hunching your shoulders. Shooters with shorter arms sometimes find this position forces them to raise their shoulder or tilt their torso, which defeats the purpose. A thinner glove helps with this position because a thick padded glove acts like a sponge, reducing vertical stability.

Knuckle fist

Curl your fingers into a loose fist and let the rifle rest on the knuckles of the index and middle fingers. Keep the wrist straight. The fingers themselves should be relaxed, not clenched. You are creating a flat platform from the knuckles, not gripping anything.

This gives you more height than the flat palm, which makes it a good option for shooters who need the rifle a bit higher. The tension level is moderate: the wrist needs some activation to keep the platform stable, but the hand itself can stay fairly relaxed.

The downside shows up over longer strings. Even a lightly maintained fist introduces fatigue in the forearm and hand. By shot 40 or 50, you may notice the platform starting to shake or drift. This position also varies between individuals because knuckle height is not uniform. Your middle finger knuckle might sit higher than your index, which naturally angles the rifle inward toward your face. Some shooters use this to their advantage, treating the slight angle as a built-in cant correction.

Flat between fingers

The rifle rests in the V-shape between two extended fingers, usually the index and middle finger. This used to be common with older wooden stocks that had narrow rounded fore-ends. Modern aluminum and carbon stocks with wide flat fore-ends make this position difficult or uncomfortable for most shooters.

A modified version still appears occasionally: instead of keeping the fingers straight, you relax them and let the rifle rest on the first bone segments (proximal phalanges) with the fingers draped loosely on each side. This is more comfortable than the rigid between-fingers version but still produces a relatively high position with more tension than the palm method.

For most shooters using modern equipment, this is the least practical option. It is worth knowing about because you will see it in old coaching manuals and occasionally in competition photos, but it is rarely the best choice for a beginner.

How your hand position affects natural point of aim

Beyond choosing which hand style to use, you can shift the hand forward or backward along the fore-end to control where the muzzle points. Move the hand closer to your face and the rifle sits higher. Move it away from your face and it drops. The most stable configuration is when your forearm is vertical or very nearly vertical, carrying the load straight down through the elbow to the hip.

Avoid placing the hand behind your vertical line, meaning your arm angles backward toward your body. This compromises the structural integrity of the support column. A slight outward angle is common among top shooters and works fine, but a backward lean should be avoided.

Once you find a hand and elbow combination that gives you minimal tension and the correct natural point of aim, commit to it. Resist the urge to make small adjustments between shots or between strings. Consistency across a 60-shot match depends on the support side feeling identical every time you raise the rifle.

How to test your support side in practice

Here is a simple drill to evaluate whether your current support setup is costing you points.

Set up a target at 10 meters. Load the rifle and get into your full standing position, but do not look through the sights. Instead, close your eyes, raise the rifle to your face, and let it settle for five seconds. Open your eyes and check where the front sight sits relative to the target. If it is consistently high, low, left, or right of center, your natural point of aim is off and you are using muscle to compensate during every shot.

Now, without changing anything, have a training partner gently push the rifle sideways at the fore-end. Release the pressure. The rifle should return to its original position on its own. If it does not, or if your arm swings wider than expected, you have too much tension somewhere in the support column.

Finally, shoot a ten-shot group while paying attention to your elbow and hand. After each shot, ask yourself: did the rifle settle into the exact same spot on my palm? Did my elbow shift on the hip? If you notice movement, you have found your fix. Mark the spot on your fore-end with a small piece of tape and try to place your hand on that mark every time.

Putting it together

Your support hand and elbow are not exciting topics. There is no dramatic technique to master, no fast-paced drill to run. The work here is quiet and repetitive: find bone contact, relax the hand, keep the wrist straight, repeat until it feels like the rifle balances itself. That is exactly the point. The best support side is the one you do not have to think about during a match. Set it up correctly, lock it in, and let it do its job while your attention stays on the sight picture and the trigger.
