Every rifle shooter with a diopter sight eventually asks the same question at the club: what rear aperture size am I supposed to be using? The box of spare inserts sits in the range bag, everyone has an opinion, and the honest answer is that your diopter rear aperture size is personal. That said, "personal" does not mean arbitrary. The aperture changes your sight picture in predictable ways, and there is a sensible starting point plus a simple test that settles the question with your own groups instead of someone else's theory.
What does the rear aperture in a diopter sight actually do?
The rear aperture is the small hole you look through at the back of your diopter sight. It works like the pinhole in a pinhole camera: a smaller opening increases your depth of field, bringing the front sight and, to a useful degree, the target into sharper apparent focus at the same time.
That sharpening is why aperture sights work so well for precision shooting in the first place. Your eye cannot truly focus on a target 10 or 50 meters away and on a front sight a meter from your face simultaneously. The narrow cone of light through the aperture does part of that job for you, so the rings look crisper without you straining.
The trade-off is light. Every time you shrink the hole, less light reaches your eye and the whole image dims. Sizing an aperture is really the art of balancing sharpness against brightness for your eyes and your range.
How aperture size changes what you see
Shrink the aperture and two things happen. Depth of field increases, so the front ring and aiming black look sharper. At the same time the image gets darker and, when you go too far, dim and vignetted at the edges. Hold too long and the bull seems to fade out mid-aim.
Open the aperture and the reverse occurs. The picture brightens, which helps on a dimly lit indoor range, but the target goes soft again and you start chasing focus with your eye. Your head also drifts more freely behind a large hole, because a big aperture forgives small head movements that a tight one would punish with a dark shadow.

How to test aperture sizes with real groups
Opinions are cheap, so settle it with paper. A testing session takes half an hour:

- Fix everything except the aperture: same position, same hold, same pellets or ammunition batch.
- Shoot one 10-shot group at your current size.
- Change the aperture by one small step, and shoot another 10. Repeat for three or four sizes.
- Log the groups, or photograph the target and score it in an app so you can compare honestly later.
The winning size is the one that produces the tightest groups, not the one that looked prettiest while aiming. Plenty of shooters are surprised by the result. Common aperture sizing mistakes
Copying a champion's setup. Elite shooters publish their sight settings, but their eyes, front inserts, and lighting are not yours. Treat their numbers as a starting curiosity, never a destination.
Going as small as possible. The pinhole logic tempts everyone at first. Beyond a certain point you lose more to dimness and eye strain than you gain in sharpness, and fatigue sets in halfway through a 60-shot course.
