Why shooting glasses matter
In 10 metre air rifle and air pistol, you are trying to place shots inside a ring the size of a period on a printed page. At that level of precision, anything that reduces visual clarity or consistency will show up on the target. Shooting glasses are not a fashion accessory. They are a focusing system that puts your eye at the right optical distance for the thing that matters most: the front sight in pistol, or the target in rifle.
Most new shooters show up to their first competition with their everyday glasses, or nothing at all. That works for a while, but once your technique stabilises and you start chasing single-point improvements, the glasses become one of the higher-return upgrades you can make. This post covers what they do, what to buy, and how to set them up.
How shooting glasses work
A set of ISSF shooting glasses has three main components working together.
The lens. This is a corrective lens mounted in a frame positioned in front of your dominant (aiming) eye. In pistol shooting, the lens is typically a positive diopter lens that brings the front sight into sharp focus at about 50 to 70 cm from your eye, roughly the distance between your eye and the front sight when your arm is extended. In rifle shooting, the lens is usually a much weaker correction or even a plano lens, because the rifle's rear diopter sight already handles the focusing. The lens prescription is not the same as your regular glasses. It is calibrated for a specific working distance, and getting it right matters more than the brand of frame you put it in.
The iris (aperture). This is a mechanical diaphragm, similar to the aperture in a camera lens, mounted in or behind the lens. By making the opening smaller, you increase depth of field, which means both the front sight and the target appear acceptably sharp at the same time. The trade-off is that less light reaches your eye, so the image gets dimmer as you close the iris down. The skill is finding the sweet spot: sharp enough to see clearly, bright enough to avoid eye strain over a 60-shot match.
The blinder (occluder). A small opaque panel, usually made of plastic or metal, positioned in front of your non-dominant eye. Its job is simple: block that eye from seeing anything. When both eyes are open, your brain tries to merge two slightly different images, which can cause the sight picture to shift or the target to appear doubled. The blinder eliminates that conflict. Under ISSF rules, a front blinder can be up to 30 mm wide, and side blinders up to 40 mm deep, attached to the glasses, hat, or a headband.

Rifle vs pistol: different needs, different setups
The fundamental difference comes down to what you need to see clearly.
Air rifle shooters look through a rear diopter sight that already has a small iris (typically around 1.0 to 1.2 mm). That rear sight iris does most of the depth-of-field work. The shooting glasses lens for rifle is often just a distance correction, or a very mild positive lens. Some rifle shooters even use a plano (zero diopter) lens and let the diopter handle everything. The glasses frame mainly holds the blinder for the non-aiming eye.
Air pistol shooters have no rear diopter. They rely entirely on the shooting glasses lens and iris to get a sharp sight picture. The lens needs to be a stronger positive correction, usually in the +0.75 to +1.50 diopter range depending on the shooter's age and natural accommodation. The iris on pistol glasses typically opens wider than a rifle diopter, often set between 1.5 and 2.5 mm, because you need more light (pistol targets have thinner ring lines than rifle targets) and the depth-of-field demands are slightly different.

Getting the right lens prescription
This is the step most beginners get wrong. You cannot simply use your reading glasses prescription and expect good results.
The focal distance for pistol shooting is the distance from your eye to the front sight when you are in your shooting position with your arm extended. That is usually between 50 and 75 cm, which falls between typical reading distance (35 to 40 cm) and computer distance (60 to 70 cm). An optometrist who does not shoot will often prescribe for one of those standard distances, not your actual sight distance.
The best approach is to measure the distance yourself. Set up in your shooting position, have someone measure from your aiming eye to the front sight blade, and give that number to the optometrist. Some shooting-glass specialists (Champion Brillen in Switzerland, Optiek Van Gorp in Belgium, and several others around Europe) will do the measurement and prescribe the lens as a package. That costs more than a high-street optician, but the result is noticeably better.
If you wear contact lenses for distance vision, you can use a pair of non-prescription shooting glasses over them with just the iris and blinder. Some shooters prefer this, especially if their distance correction is strong and a lens mounted in the glasses frame would be too thick.
Iris aperture: how to find your setting
The iris controls depth of field. A smaller opening gives you more depth of field (more of the sight picture appears in focus) but lets in less light. A larger opening does the opposite.
A practical starting routine:
- Set the iris wide open. Look at the front sight (pistol) or through the diopter at the target (rifle). Everything will probably look slightly fuzzy.
- Close it down in small steps. Pause at each step and check whether the sight and target are getting sharper.
- Stop when both are acceptably sharp. For rifle diopters, this is typically around 1.0 to 1.2 mm. For pistol glasses, expect to land between 1.5 and 2.5 mm depending on your lens and the lighting.
- Check the brightness. If the image looks dim or grey, open the iris slightly. Eye strain over a long match is a real performance killer, and a slightly less sharp but brighter picture often scores better than a razor-sharp but dim one.
Do not change your iris setting during a match unless the lighting changes dramatically (for example, moving from an indoor range with fluorescent lights to a brightly lit finals arena). Pick your setting during training and stick with it.
Choosing a frame: what to buy as a beginner
You do not need a 500-euro frame to shoot a decent score. The main brands used in ISSF competition are Champion (Swiss) and Knobloch (German). Both offer entry-level models that cover everything a beginner needs.

Both frames let you attach a lens, an iris, a blinder, and accessory filters. The differences at the entry level are mostly about comfort, adjustability, and build quality, not optical performance. The lens prescription and iris setting matter far more than the frame brand.
Other brands like Gehmann, MEC, and Decot also make serviceable shooting glasses, but Champion and Knobloch are the most widely available and easiest to find replacement parts for.
Common beginner mistakes
Using reading glasses directly. The focal distance is wrong, there is no iris, and there is no way to attach a blinder. They are better than nothing, but they leave a lot of performance on the table.
Setting the iris too small. A common temptation is to close the iris down until everything looks perfectly sharp. The problem is that the image gets too dark, your pupil dilates to compensate (which defeats the purpose), and eye fatigue sets in around shot 30. Open it up a notch.
Ignoring the non-dominant eye. Shooting with both eyes open but without a blinder means your brain is processing two images simultaneously. Even if you do not notice the doubling consciously, it introduces micro-fluctuations in your sight alignment. Add a blinder and see whether your groups tighten.
Not getting the lens measured at shooting distance. A lens prescribed for 40 cm reading distance, when your front sight sits at 65 cm, will leave the sight blade slightly blurry. It is a small error, but at the level where shooters are chasing single rings, it matters.
Putting it all together
Start with a basic frame, get the lens prescribed for your actual sight distance, add a simple iris and a blinder, and spend your training time learning to use them consistently. The glasses will not fix a bad hold or a flinching trigger finger, but they will make sure that when your technique is right, your eyes are not the limiting factor.
