That approach works eventually, but it wastes pellets, creates confusion when the group wanders, and hides the real problem: you never established a reliable baseline. Understanding diopter sight adjustments

An ISSF competition air rifle uses a diopter rear sight (a small peep hole mounted close to your eye) paired with a globe front sight (a ring or tube with an insert element). The rear sight has two independent adjustment mechanisms:

Elevation moves your point of impact up or down. Most rear sights have a vertical drum or knob on the side, often marked with numbered clicks. Turning it one direction raises impact; the opposite direction lowers it.

Windage moves your point of impact left or right. This is usually a horizontal drum on top of the rear sight body, again with click detents.

Fire five to ten shots at the target with your best possible technique. Call each shot as you break the trigger. If you know a shot was a bad release, a flinch, or a wobble break, make a note on the target face. Do not count obvious outliers when deciding where to adjust.

Look at the center of your called-good group. That cluster, not any single hole, tells you where your sights need to go.

Step three: apply corrections

The rule for diopter sights follows the same logic as any sight system: adjust the rear sight in the direction you want the group to move. If your group sits low and left of center, move the elevation knob to raise impact and the windage knob to push impact right.

Some shooters get confused because pistol open sights work the opposite way on the front element. With a diopter, you are always moving the rear sight. Keep it simple: group low, turn elevation up. Group right, turn windage left.

Make corrections one axis at a time. Adjust windage first if your group is significantly off-center horizontally, then elevation. Fire another three to five shots after each adjustment to confirm the direction of change. Resist the urge to keep clicking based on a single shot. The group is what matters.

Once your group centers on the bull, note the click positions on both drums. Write them down in your training log or tape a small label to your stock. If something shifts in the future, you have a known reference to return to.

Step four: verify over a full card

A five-shot group tells you direction. A full 60-shot card tells you whether your zero holds under real conditions.
