Why breathing control matters in ISSF shooting
When you breathe in, your chest expands, your shoulders rise, and your center of gravity shifts. That is fine when you are walking around, but it is a problem when you need a sight picture steady within a single millimeter at 10 meters. In ISSF 10m events, the entire ten-ring on an air rifle target is just 0.5 mm in real terms at the target face. Any unnecessary body movement directly costs you points.
Breathing control does not mean stopping your breath. It means timing your shot release so it happens during the brief natural stillness that occurs at the bottom of an exhale. This window, called the natural respiratory pause, is where your body is most stable.
The natural respiratory pause explained
Here is what happens when you breathe normally and then pause:
- Inhale. Air fills your lungs, your ribcage expands, and your body shifts slightly upward. Your sight picture moves.
- Exhale slowly. As air leaves your lungs, your chest settles. Your body drops back toward its resting position.
- Natural pause. At the end of the exhale, before you feel the urge to inhale again, there is a window of 3 to 5 seconds where your body is almost completely still. Your diaphragm is relaxed, your heart rate is at its lowest in the cycle, and your muscles are not working to move air.
- Urges to inhale. As carbon dioxide builds in your blood, your diaphragm starts to contract involuntarily. Your body wants the next breath. Movement returns, and your hold deteriorates.
The shot needs to happen during step 3. If you try to hold through step 4, you will fight your own body and the shot will go somewhere you did not plan.
The exhale method vs the inhale method
You might hear shooters talk about two different approaches:
The exhale method (recommended for beginners): Breathe in as you raise the gun, exhale slowly as you settle into your hold, and release the trigger during the natural pause at the bottom of the exhale. This is the standard approach taught by most ISSF coaches because it produces the most stable hold with the least tension.
The inhale method (advanced, less common): The shooter takes a partial breath, holds it at a specific point in the lung capacity, and shoots from there. A few experienced competitors prefer this, but it requires precise lung volume control and adds tension to the hold. It is not recommended until you have years of experience and a coach helping you fine-tune it.
If you are reading this and have fewer than a couple of seasons of competition behind you, stick with the exhale method. It works at every level of the sport, including the Olympic final.
How to time your shot within the breathing cycle
The sequence looks like this in practice:
- Load and prepare. Take a normal breath or two while you settle into position. Do not rush.
- Raise the pistol or rifle to the target. You can time this with an inhale so your body is expanding upward as the gun comes up.
- Begin a slow, controlled exhale as your front sight settles into the aiming area.
- As you approach the bottom of the exhale, start your trigger preparation. Your finger should be making contact and taking up slack during the last part of the exhale.
- Release the trigger during the natural pause. Do not wait until you feel the urge to breathe. If you reach that point, abort the shot, lower the gun, and start the cycle again.
A good rule of thumb: if you cannot get the shot off within 3 seconds of the pause starting, put the gun down. Trying to force it trains bad habits and builds anxiety about running out of time.

Common breathing mistakes
Holding at the top of an inhale. This is the most common error for newer shooters. You raise the gun, take a big breath in, hold it, and try to shoot. The problem is that a full lung creates upward pressure in your chest and tension across your shoulders. Your hold is less stable than it would be at the bottom of an exhale, and the longer you hold, the more your muscles tremor from the effort of keeping everything tight.
Waiting too long in the pause. The natural pause is not a long hold. Shooters who try to extend it beyond 5 seconds start fighting involuntary diaphragm contractions. The shot breaks at the wrong moment, or they release the trigger in a rush at the last second. If the pause is running out, abort and start over.
Breathing too shallowly. Some shooters, worried about body movement, try to breathe as little as possible. That actually makes things worse because shallow breathing means your body never fully relaxes into the exhale pause. You end up in a state of partial tension the entire session. Breathe normally between shots and save the pause for when you are actually firing.
Not breathing between shots. Holding your breath across multiple shots causes oxygen levels to drop and heart rate to climb. By the second or third shot in a string, your hands are shaking and your focus is gone. Take two or three full breath cycles between each shot.
Dry-fire drills to build breathing timing
You do not need a range or even pellets to practice breathing control. These drills work at home with an unloaded gun or a dry-fire training pistol:
Drill 1: Counted pause. Raise your gun, exhale, and count "one, two, three" during the natural pause. On "three," simulate a trigger release. If you reach three and it feels forced, the pause was too long. If you release before two, you were probably rushing. The goal is a comfortable release around count two.
Drill 2: Five-shot cycle. Simulate a full 10-shot string with proper breathing between every shot. Inhale, raise, exhale, pause, release. Lower the gun, take three full breaths, and repeat. Time the full string with a stopwatch. As you improve, the total time should decrease because your breathing cycle becomes more efficient.
Drill 3: Abort and recover. Deliberately let the pause run too long on every third shot. Practice recognizing that uncomfortable "I need to breathe" feeling, lowering the gun smoothly, taking recovery breaths, and starting again. - Vertical stringing (shots spread top to bottom) often points to inconsistent breathing. Shots fired during the inhale land higher, shots during the exhale land lower, and shots in the pause cluster together.

A solid routine might look like this: approach the line, check stance, load, take two breaths, raise on the third inhale, exhale into the hold, release during the pause.
