Why regular practice is not enough

Most shooters spend their range time working on individual elements: trigger control one session, breathing the next, stance another day. That isolated practice builds the skills, but it does not build the ability to string sixty good shots together under a ticking clock.

Think of it like running. You can sprint 100 metres, jog comfortably, and do ladder drills all week. That does not mean you are ready for a 10-kilometre race. The race demands sustained pace, energy management, and the discipline to keep going when your legs hurt. Match simulation is the race.

In ISSF 10m competition, air rifle shooters fire 60 shots in 105 minutes (men) or 40 shots in 75 minutes (women). Air pistol follows the same shot counts and time limits. Each shot is scored, every point matters, and there are no do-overs. If you have only ever shot ten pellets at a time without a stopwatch, stepping onto the competition firing line for the first time can feel like a completely different sport.

A well-run simulation practice replicates the competition structure, the time pressure, and the mental demands. It also shows you exactly where your endurance breaks down: usually around shots 35 to 45 for newer shooters.

Setting up your simulation

Timing and format

Match the official ISSF course of fire for your discipline and gender category:

Set a countdown timer on your phone or a shot clock app. Start it when your preparation time begins. The preparation period is for sighting shots only; no competition shots count until the main clock starts. Most ISSF events allow an unlimited number of sighting shots during prep.

If you are shooting paper targets, use a standard ISSF competition card with the correct number of bulls. For air rifle, that means a card of ten bulls with one shot per bull, shot sequentially. For air pistol, the format is the same: ten bulls, one shot each, cycling through the card. Electronic targets handle the transition automatically.

Scoring as you go

Score every shot immediately if your range has electronic targets. If you are on paper, photograph each completed bull with TargetLog before moving to the next one. This serves two purposes: you get your running total and you build the post-shot record habit that competition requires.

Knowing your score mid-session is part of the mental challenge. Seeing a 9 instead of a 10 can unsettle you. Learning to process that information without letting it derail your next five shots is one of the most valuable skills a simulation teaches.

The full simulation routine

Before you load: preparation

Arrive at the range with the same routine you would use on match day. Eat the same breakfast, wear the same shooting clothes, and go through your normal gear check. This is not the day to try a new grip, a different pellet brand, or an experimental stance adjustment. Simulation practice tests your existing ability, not your experiments.

During the 15-minute preparation period, fire sighting shots until you are confident in your zero and your hold feels right. Some shooters need three or four sighting shots; others want ten or more. There is no penalty for using the full prep time. If your zero is off and you need all fifteen minutes to sort it out, take the time.

The main course of fire

Once the main clock starts, every shot is scored and irreversible. Shoot one shot per bull in sequence, just like competition. Between shots, go through your full pre-shot routine: stance reset, breath cycle, sight picture, trigger squeeze, follow-through. Do not shortcut the process to save time.

Resist the temptation to rush shots when you feel behind the clock. A common mistake in early simulations is treating the time limit as a sprint. In reality, most shooters finish well within the allotted time. If you are shooting 40 shots in 75 minutes, that is almost two minutes per shot. Even with position resets and score recording, that is generous. Pace yourself.

If you fire a shot you know is bad, do not dwell on it. Record the score and move to the next bull. The mental recovery between shots is the same skill you need in competition. You can analyse the pattern after the session, not during it.

After the final shot

When the last pellet is down, total your score before you leave the firing point. Write it down alongside the date and any notes about conditions, how you felt physically, or anything unusual that happened during the session. This data becomes valuable when you review your progress over weeks.

Adding pressure layers

Once the basic simulation feels routine, you can increase the difficulty to better match competition conditions.

Audience simulation

Ask a teammate or coach to stand behind you and observe during your simulation. Even knowing someone is watching your hold and trigger discipline changes the way most shooters perform. If you normally shoot a 560 average alone, do not be surprised if your first observed simulation drops five to ten points.

Noise and distraction

Play ambient range sounds through earbuds under your hearing protection. Some shooters simulate crowd noise, especially if they are preparing for a major event with spectators. Start with low volume and increase it over several sessions.

Elimination finals practice

After your qualification simulation, run a condensed finals format. In the ISSF finals, the eight lowest-scoring shooters are eliminated after every two shots. You can simulate this by shooting ten shots with a 50-second time limit per shot (the ISSF finals time limit) and tracking which "position" you would hold at each elimination round. This format teaches you to manage pressure when the margin for error shrinks to single digits.

Common mistakes in simulation practice

Treating it like a training session. If you stop to adjust your sling, change pellets mid-string, or reshoot a bull because the first shot felt wrong, you are not simulating. The whole point is to deal with whatever happens on the spot, just like in competition.

Changing equipment mid-simulation. If your grip feels off or your sights look blurry, work with it. You cannot swap out your grip during a match. Adapt and finish the card.

Skipping the warm-up. Some shooters arrive at the range, slap a target up, and start firing competition shots immediately. In a real match, you have preparation time for a reason. Use it. A proper warm-up routine prevents early-session poor scores that drag down your total.

Focusing only on the final score. Your total score matters, but the shot-by-shot distribution tells you more. Are you losing points in the first ten shots (warm-up issues), the middle twenty (fatigue), or the last ten (mental pressure)? How often and when

For shooters with a competition on the calendar, weekly simulations are standard. Schedule them on the same day of the week you expect to compete, ideally at the same time of day. Your body and mind adapt to rhythms, and firing at 9 a.m. in practice helps when your relay starts at 9 a.m. on match day.

During the final two weeks before a competition, reduce your technical drilling and increase simulation frequency to two per week. Cut out any experimentation during this taper period. Your goal is consistency and confidence, not new skills.

If you do not have a competition coming up, a monthly simulation still has value. It serves as a fitness check: you will quickly see whether your endurance has improved or whether a specific phase of the course of fire has started to slip.

Connecting simulations to your training plan

After each simulation, compare your results against your recent training scores. A useful pattern to watch: if your training averages (casual 10-shot groups) are significantly higher than your simulation scores, the gap is probably mental, not technical. That suggests you need more exposure to timed, scored shooting rather than more trigger drills or stance work.

Use the simulation data to adjust the coming week's training. If your scores drop in shots 30 to 40, add a focused endurance block where you shoot 20 pellets without a break, paying attention to maintaining your pre-shot routine as fatigue sets in. If your first ten shots are erratic, work on a more disciplined warm-up sequence in your next few sessions.

A training log makes this loop work. Without recorded data, you are guessing. With it, you can see clear trends: your simulation average climbing from 545 to 560 over six weeks, your low-score shots shifting from the middle of the card to the last five, or your standard deviation tightening as your consistency improves.
