What are ISSF electronic targets and how do they work?
An electronic target uses acoustic or optical sensors behind the target face to locate each shot's impact point and compute its ring value instantly. A monitor at your firing point shows the score and position, replacing manual scoring with plug gauges and marking pens.
Inside the frame, the visible black face is a replaceable rubber membrane or paper sheet stretched over sensor hardware. In the common acoustic design, several microphones sit around the strike zone and triangulate the shockwave of the pellet hitting the face; the system converts that position into a ring value mathematically. How does scoring change on electronic targets?
The rings are unchanged. A ten is still a ten, the dimensions match the paper target for your discipline, and your hold, sight picture and release decide the outcome exactly as before. What changes is what happens after the shot lands.
Scores appear immediately at your firing point, shot by shot, with a running total. In qualification that value is a whole ring, just as it would be on paper. In finals the same hardware shows tenths: each shot in the ten ring is scored from 10.0 to 10.9 based on distance from the centre, which is how finalists get separated without a single tiebreak shot being wasted. There is also a spectator layer you only notice at bigger events. Large screens around the hall mirror each final's shots so the audience follows the drama live, something a paper target can never offer. Neither system is "the real one". World titles are decided on electronics and club legends are built on paper, and the underlying score is meant to be identical. The differences live in speed, resolution and the dispute process, not in the rings.
How are paper targets scored when electronics are not used?
Manually, and more carefully than beginners expect. After the relay, a scorer reads each shot hole and writes its ring value in the corner of the target. The unambiguous ones go fast. When a hole touches the line between two rings, the scorer uses a plug gauge, a precisely machined plug inserted into the hole; if the gauge's edge cuts the higher ring line, the shot scores the higher value. That edge-to-edge principle, the hole touching rather than centring on the ring, decides every borderline shot on paper.
Two shooters reading the same target will agree on 58 of 60 shots and shrug about the rest, which is why the gauge exists and why formal protests have a defined process. It is slower than a screen, but it is transparent: you can watch a measurement happen, and the target itself remains as evidence.
What happens when you disagree with a score?
On electronic targets, first look at your monitor. The shot position and value shown there is what the system recorded, and most "wrong score" moments are actually right shots the shooter did not want. If you still believe the value is wrong, raise it with the range officer rather than arguing with the screen.
Know the cost before you insist. In qualification, a shooter may formally protest the value of a shot; if the protest is denied, a two-point penalty is applied automatically. Do electronic targets change how you should train?
Only in the good sense: you get a shot-by-shot record without touching a pen. Use it the way a coach would. Read the value after the shot is finished, not during the hold, and look for group position and shape before you look at any single score. A string of 10.2s with two nines at the same clock position tells you something a paper target only reveals after you collect it.
Train on both systems if you can. Leagues, club championships and selection matches at many levels still run on paper, and the skills differ slightly: on paper you call each shot before the target comes back, which builds honesty that instant screens quietly erode.
