Why tiebreaking matters
In a 60-shot 10m air rifle match, two shooters can finish on the exact same total, say 585. That is not unusual at club level, and it happens at World Cups too. When the scoreboard shows identical numbers, something has to decide who advances to the final or who stands on the higher step of the podium. That something is the ISSF tiebreaking procedure.
Tiebreaking does not add or subtract points. It is a ranking method, a way to order shooters whose totals are equal. Understanding it changes how you think about your shot string. A single 10.9 late in the match can push you ahead of someone who shot the same total but lacked that one deep center shot.
Inner tens: the first tiebreaker
The inner ten zone (sometimes called the "X zone") is the innermost part of the 10-ring. On a 10m air rifle target, the inner ten has a diameter of just 0.5 mm. On the 10m air pistol target, it is 5.0 mm. Regardless of the discipline, any shot landing inside this zone scores an inner ten, and these inner tens are tallied separately from the total score.
When two or more shooters tie on total score, the first question officials ask is: who has more inner tens? If Shooter A has 25 inner tens and Shooter B has 22, Shooter A ranks higher, even though both shot, for example, 583.
This is why elite coaches track the inner-ten count religiously. It is not vanity; it is the first ranking criterion after the raw total. A training session where you average 10.2 but only hit three inner tens is fundamentally different from one where you average 9.8 but rack up fifteen of them. The second shooter has a better tiebreaking position despite the lower average.
If the inner-ten counts are also equal, the procedure moves to the next step.
Countback: working backwards through your shots
Countback is the second layer of the tiebreaking procedure, and it works in a specific direction: from the end of the match towards the beginning. Here is the sequence:
- Compare the highest individual shot value for each tied shooter, starting from the last shot fired.
- If those are equal, compare the next-highest individual shot value, again from the last shot working backwards.
- Continue this process until one shooter has a higher shot value at the same position in the countback.
Let's make this concrete. Two shooters are tied at 581 with identical inner-ten counts. The countback might look like this:

Shooter A ranks higher because their last shot is deeper. The comparison stops right there. The match does not continue; the tiebreak is decided by that single shot.
If the last shots were also equal, the procedure would continue. Shot 59, then shot 58, and so on. It is rare for the countback to go deep, because the probability of matching shot-for-shot decreases with each step, but it can happen.
What this means for your training
The practical implication is straightforward: your final shots carry disproportionate weight in tiebreaking scenarios. That does not mean you should ease up early and pour everything into the last five shots. A 9 on shot 12 costs you a full point that no amount of late-match heroics can recover. But given two shooters with the same total and the same inner-ten count, the one who shot better at the end of the string comes out ahead.
For training, this suggests a useful exercise. After a standard 60-shot session, look at your last ten shots specifically. Are they as strong as your first ten? Another training angle: inner-ten drills. Set up a 10-shot series where the only metric that matters is how many shots land inside the inner ten. The total score is irrelevant for this drill. You are training your ability to hold center, not just to hit the ten. Over time, a higher inner-ten percentage translates directly into a better tiebreaking position.
Qualification vs. finals tiebreaking
The countback procedure described above applies to qualification rounds. Finals operate differently.
In ISSF finals, the format is elimination-based. Shooters are knocked out in stages, and if two athletes are tied at an elimination cut, they fire additional shot(s) until the tie breaks. There is no countback in finals. It is a live shoot-off, decided on the spot under pressure.
This distinction matters because the mental approach is different. In qualification, you can afford to think about the long game: steady consistency, managing inner tens, and finishing strong. In a final, every shot is immediate and consequential in a way that qualification shots are not.

Common misconceptions about tiebreaking
"If I shoot a higher average, I will always win the tiebreak."
Not true. Tiebreaking does not consider averages. It considers the count of inner tens and the values of specific shots. Two shooters with very different shot distributions can finish with the same total and the same inner-ten count, and the countback will then look at individual shots, not how smooth the string was.
"Tiebreaking only matters at the Olympics."
It matters at every level where advancement or placement is decided by ranking. Club matches often have limited final spots, and a tiebreaker can determine who gets to shoot in the final and who watches. Domestic competitions use the same ISSF rules, so the procedure is identical whether you are at a local club or a World Cup.
"I should aim for 10.9s on every shot to win tiebreaks."
Aiming for the center is always correct, but fixating on 10.9s can make you over-hold and introduce tension. The realistic goal for most competitive shooters is to increase the proportion of inner tens (10.1 and above) in their string. That alone puts you in a strong tiebreaking position. The occasional 10.9 is a bonus, not a requirement.
